Troubles with jewelry descriptions

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 14, 2012, 3:53 AM
Jewelry making is a pleasure, a cure, a way of charging batteries. Photographing created jewelry is also a pleasure. Playing with surfaces, backgrounds and props is a part of creative process which I also find fulfilling because photography is my second great love.

Now we come to the part of presenting my work to the world which makes me sweat and bite my nails because a void occurs in that part of the brain which is usually filed with ideas.

I often read with jealousy other peoples descriptions of their work. Some are too much and kitschy, but others are just right and make you fall even more in love with the piece they are describing.

To me, words just vanish. Beside dry facts like what it is made of and which techniques I used, I have nothing magical to write.

Not to mention adding tags to listings on Etsy, my second biggest nightmare :)

I've been struggling with this for years. I wish that photos and work itself would be enough, but I am aware of the fact that poor descriptions are a big disadvantage.

I tried to find inspiration in other peoples descriptions, but my muse failed, and processing others texts seemed like cheating during the exam in school.

What are your experiences? Where do you find inspiration for describing your work?

Tips & tricks are more than welcome!

  • Listening to: 4U classic rock
  • Reading: Pride & Prejudice for hundreth time
  • Drinking: nescaffe
